Workshop: Energy self-sufficiency in organic farming?
Chair: Erik Steen Jensen and Niels Halberg, Denmark

Type: Public

Fossil energy resources are limited and expected to become more expensive in the future. At the same time the accelerating fossil energy use results in enhanced green-house gas emissions and climate change. Although organic farming aims at using renewable sources of energy, fossil energy constitute a dominant energy supply in large part of global organic farming.

Organic farming could be self-sufficient in energy from solar, wind and biomass resources. Biofuels (ethanol, plant oils, gas) in particular would be important fuels for machinery and transport, but any bioenergy production would require land and consideration for soil fertility. Potentially organic farming could export renewable energies to the cities. The expertise on energy use and efficiency in organic farming and in the potential for increasingly integrate energy production in organic farming systems is fragmented. However, there are a number of researchers and others in different institutions and countries with important knowledge and ideas on this subject. Therefore, we find the ISOFAR and IFOAM conference an important chance for bringing interested parties together for sharing experience.

Objectives:
  • to identify requirements for developments and research needs within energy use efficiency and renewable energy production in organic farming.
  • to form a network for international collaboration, e.g. a section/working group on energy in ISOFAR.

Expected results:
Network on energy research in organic farming
