Conference 'Food in Future Climate - Conference on Organic Food Systems' in Norrköping, Sweden
For the the tenth time the Centre for Sustainable Agriculture CUL at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences SLU
arranges a Conference on Sustainable Food Systems and Organic Agriculture. The conference is held every other year and the last conference was in 2005.
The conference of 2007 'Food in Future Climate - Conference on Organic Food Systems' will largely be focusing on issues concerning the on-going climate change in relation to sustainable, organic food production.
For the first time the conference offers an entirely new section for international visitors. This section will be focusing on the global issues of sustainable food production and the seminars will be held in English. The aim of the international section is to exchange research results, political and practical experience in a multinational and multidisciplinary forum. The conference is open to anyone who´s involved in the system of food production and consumption.

Symposium on plant breeding for organic and sustainable, low-input agriculture, Wageningen
The first EUCARPIA symposium on Organic Plant Breeding - Plant breeding for organic and sustainable, low-input agriculture: dealing with genotype-environment interactions - took place in Wageningen in November 2007. EUCARPIA is the European Association for Research on Plant Breeding.
One of the major constraints in organic farming is that farmers still largely depend on crop varieties produced for conventional farming systems with high inputs of artificial, mineral fertilisers and chemicals for crop defence. Therefore, the organic sector urgently requires breeding programmes for robust varieties, which are better adapted to low-input conditions, with traits such as improved root systems, stronger interspecific competition ability (weed suppression) and yield stability. The symposium explored alternative strategies to overcome these constraints, hereby also using insight and knowledge from agronomic fields working at a higher aggregation level (i.e. crop level).
The event was organised in cooperation with Cost Action 860 (COST860 - Sustainable low-input cereal production: required varietal characteristics and crop diversity, SUSVAR), the European Consortium of Ecological Plant Breeding ECOPB, ISOFAR and the the Graduate School Production Ecology & Resource Conservationand Wageningen University.
The Proceedings are avilable at the Organic Eprints Archive.

Seminar "Challenges and limitations in organic farming" in Copenhagen
From June 26 to 29, 2007, the 23rd Congress of the the Nordic Association of Agricultural Scientists NJF will take place in Copenhagen, Denmark. The programme inlcudes a seminar on "challenges and limitations in organic farming".
The topic deals with some of the fundamental challenges in organic farming. The organic farming practices are governed by regulations for the specific country and by the growing conditions. The main aim in organic farming research is to improve the sustainability with respect to production, environmental effects, economy, and human and animal welfare. However, these intentions may counteract each other and the regulations may in some cases impede improvements of the sustainability. Therefore, all improvements within single disciplines must be evaluated in a whole-system and long-term context, and the weak links must be identified to improve the sustainability.
Keynote speakers include Christine Watson from the Crop & Soil Group of the Scottish Agricultural College, and Stephen Roderick of the Organic Studies Centre, Duchy College, UK.

International Summer School: Biodiversity supporting crop protection in Volterra, Italy
Within the education activities planned in the Network of Excellence ENDURE (European Network for the Durable Exploitation of Crop Protection strategies), funded by the European Commission (6th RTD Framework Programme), an International Summer School for PhD students will take place.
The topic of the first Summer School (Volterra, Italy, September 10-14, 2007) is "". This Summer School is aimed to a maximum of 15 PhD students from any country working on a research project related to the possibility of exploiting biodiversity (at any level/scale) for designing improved and more environmentally-friendly crop protection strategies. The Summer School will be run by internationally renowned experts belonging to ENDURE partners and to other Universities/research institutions in Europe and overseas. More details as well as the requirements for applying can be found on: http://summerschools.endure-network.eu Costs for participation in the Summer School will be covered by ENDURE (see details on the Summer School website). The deadline for receipt of online applications is 20 June 2007. Any specific questions related to the Summer School must be directed to: endure.summerschool@sssup.it I would be happy if you could circulate this info as much as possible and especially to potentially interested PhD students in your institution and elsewhere.
